University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust

Trust gets ahead of the game.

University Hospitals of Leicester are one of the biggest and busiest NHS Trusts in the country, serving the one million residents of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland – and increasingly specialist services over a much wider area.

Dakota has secured an order for 140 Zebra HC100 wristband printers from UHL NHS as part of the trusts Positive Patient ID initiative. The project was secured by Dakota for their innovative approach in swapping out brand new LP2844 printers the trust had previously bought, replacing them with the new cartridge loading Zebra HC100 printer.

UHL has three sites in & around Leicester and is one of the largest NHS Trusts in England & Wales with in excess of 220,000 patient admissions per annum. Dakota helped UHL with formatting the wristband layout & integrate with the hospital iSOFT PAS system.

Commenting on the PPI project IM&T Project Manager Lisa Carr said:

“Dakota’s approach was innovative, informed & relevant to our situation. As soon as they demonstrated the benefits of the Zebra HC100 & after we showed some of the clinical staff the printer in operation it was just a case of making the commercials stack up. Dakota proved to be a great help in formatting the bands to comply with NPSA guidelines & also in supporting our move towards 2D DataMatrix barcodes. I would have no hesitation in recommending Dakota to other trusts rolling out PPI in view of their know how, industry expertise & creativity.”

The project incorporated the following elements:

  • 140 x Zebra HC100 printers networked
  • Dakota Care support contract
  • Zebra Next Generation wristbands
  • Wristband formatting & 2D DataMatrix barcode
  • iSOFT PAS system

The 140 printer deployment was the largest single roll out of HC100 wristband printers in Europe for a product that was launched in July 2008.
